How do you guys stop procrastinating?

i set aside a whole day where i would do no school work other than my hisory essay. It is now 9.20pm and i have typed a grand total of 295 words (i need 2000). Half the day ive been basically staring at a blank word document/starting to write something and then realising it either doesnt make sense or is a load of crap. The other half i have been playing games /surfing the web.

My question is. How do you pull your finger out and start working. Do you have a specific technique or are you a naturally hardworking person.

and yes, i am procrastinating through writing this. although hopefully this will help me in an indirect way.

The only way not to procrastinate is to not procrastinate. I know it sounds obvious, but honestly, there's no magical solution. You've just got to force yourself not to.

IN your situation, I'd disconnect the internet or something. When I need to get homework done I suddenly turn off my pc and sit at my desk which is a little way away and don't get up till whatever i'm doing is done. I find its best not to set yourself a time when you want to start, instead, in a moment of crazy impulse hit your pcs power button or something. This only takes a second and not very much willpower, and once it's done your pc starts shutting down so it basically forces me to do something else.

But basically, just man up and do the damn essay!

Personally, I close internet + msn. Then I get to work. If I'm tempted to play games or chill on mE, I assume the desires but make a compromise. For example, you work 2 hours, then you play 1 hour of games/forums. I end up winding myself into my work and won't bother about using my gaming break. Then, after the work is done, I'm very happy and post here about it.

If your really desperate and need to study, just put your textbook underneath your pillow and go to sleep. 9/10 doctors agree.

If you're enough desperate to believe this, prey God.

I usually leave it 'til quite late, but I mostly know when I'm really starting to push my lluck (if it's important) and get to work. Stick some music on (a good thing for me is usually an album I know really well and something not too invasive) and get some place far from the computer.

A thing that works for me is getting up ridiculously early to do work. I can take a shower, eat breakfast and then get to work, because there's really nothing else to do. I like to try to set myself goals, like having done a maths test by the end of the day. This doesn't really work as well, and can sometimes actually be detrimental (for example, I don't want to play a game or do anything that requires a long time, so I'll just be aimlessly browsing the net and procrastinating for ages) but it also keeps me from forgetting to do it and actually makes me do it at some point.
